Applications are open for the Lafarge Africa National Essay Competition. On its 60 years of operation in Nigeria, Lafarge Africa has solidified its position as a leader in the Nigerian cement industry as its products have been used in the construction of iconic monuments like the Third Mainland Bridge, Cocoa House, the National Assembly and the Akwa Ibom Stadium, among other structural edifices. The building solutions company has remained committed to supporting the development of the country by investing in key sectors like the Education sector. Through initiatives like the Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition, donation of computers, bursaries for youth in host communities, and other education-related projects, Lafarge Africa supports the improvement of learning opportunities and conditions for Nigerian children.
In celebration of its 60th Anniversary and in commemoration of Nigeria’s 60th independence, Lafarge Africa has organized the Lafarge Africa National Essay Competition. The competition aims to spotlight the prospects of Nigeria as a nation through the imagination of children.
The competition is open to Public School students between the ages of 9 to 13. Participants are to compete by writing an essay titled “Building the Nigeria of my dreams”. There are two categories:
Junior Category: Participants in this category must be in Primary School (primary 4 – primary 6). Essays in the Junior category are required to be a minimum of 500 words.
Intermediate Category: Participants in this category must be in Junior Secondary School (JSS 1 – JSS 3). Essays in the Intermediate Category are required to be a minimum of 750 words.
All essays are required to feature a specified amount of words related to Sustainability. The top entries will be screened and required to partake in a video/virtual defense for their essays. Below are the prizes to be won in both categories of the competition.
1 Diamond Prize – N1,500,000 Trust
2. Gold Prize – N1,000,000 Trust
3. Silver Prize – N750,000 Trust
books, branded school accessories such as school bags, water bottles, flasks and educational tablets, pre-loaded with educational content.
The 20 top selected participants for each category will be required to provide their birth certificate, school accreditation, passport photograph, and first term result for the 2019/2020 academic session for verification.
The top winners for each category will also receive a desktop computer system each for their schools with complete accessories.
Consolation prizes of N200, 000.00 each will be given to the authors of 2 good essays from each category. They will also receive books, branded school accessories such as school bags, water bottles and flasks.
The theme for the essay competition is “Building the Nigeria of my dreams”, which is in line with LAP’s nation building initiative, to promote patriotism and corporate citizenship.
The competition is open to:
pupils of public primary schools who are between the ages of 9 to 13 years, for the Junior Category of the competition, and
students of public junior secondary schools who are between the ages of 9 to 13 years for the Intermediate Category of the competition.
The children of LAP employees are not be allowed to participate.
Each participant is allowed to submit only one entry. Any participant who submits multiple entries will be disqualified.8
Each participant is required to complete the online forms with the required information on www.learnwithlafarge.com (the “Online Portal”). All essays must be written in English, typed, and uploaded to the Online Portal in accordance with the instructions specified.
Participants should retain their own copies of the essays as no entries will be returned. There will be no feedback on any entries, either during or after the competition.
